Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago

Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago is a pan-Asian, non-partisan, non-profit organization located in Chicago, Illinois, whose mission is to empower the Asian American community through advocacy, coalition-building, education, and research.  Advancing Justice-Chicago is a member of  Advancing Justice, whose other members include Asian American Justice Center, Asian Law Caucus, and Asian Pacific American Legal Center.  Advancing Justice-Chicago's programs include legal advocacy, community organizing, and leadership development. 

Advancing Justice-Chicago is accepting applications for its 2013 Summer Legal Internship. Advancing Justice-Chicago's legal intern will be engaging in groundbreaking work on language access, legislative advocacy, immigration and voting rights under the supervision of Advancing Justice-Chicago's Legal Director.  Working as part of a team that includes Advancing Justice-Chicago's 2013 PILI legal fellow, the legal intern will analyze novel voting rights issues; work in coalition with other ethnic groups and civic organizations; and help identify possible solutions to pressing community issues.  For example, the legal intern will assist with researching and implementing civil rights initiatives in the area of language access, including the preparation of a potential Title VI complaint to the U.S. Department of Justice.  During his or her time with Advancing Justice-Chicago, the legal intern will become an integral part of the team and will be immersed in a range of agency matters, community events, and training opportunities.

Qualifications:

·         Current law student (1L or 2L);

·         Commits to 10 full-time weeks during the summer (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm);

·         Possesses a passion for serving the Asian American community;

·         Possesses excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills;

·         Proficient in research, analytical, reporting, and critical thinking skills;

·         Self-motivated, detail-oriented and has excellent organizational skills; and

·         Bilingual ability in an Asian language preferred, but not required.

The legal intern would work in Advancing Justice-Chicago's office in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, which is easily accessible by public transportation. Advancing Justice-Chicago is an equal opportunity employer and we encourage people of all backgrounds to apply.
