Michael Chu is the President of the Board of Directors at the Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago (Advancing Justice | Chicago). Michael is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP. He focuses his practice on all aspects of patent law relating to mechanical, digital electronics and electro-mechanical arts, including litigation, opinions and prosecution.
Within his litigation practice, Michael handles patent, trademark, trade secret and copyright matters, including briefings, Markman hearings, and all aspects of discovery and settlement negotiations. His litigation experience also includes complex patent cases, design patent cases, ITC proceedings and a strong appellate practice before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Michael is admitted to practice before the Illinois Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit and for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Michael’s opinion work includes rendering written and oral opinions regarding the infringement and validity of design and utility patents in the mechanical, electro-mechanical and electrical arts.
Michael received his J.D. from the College of William and Mary, Marshall Wythe School of Law. He received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois.
Michael has been recognized by Illinois Super Lawyers for Intellectual Property Litigation from 2005 to present. He has also been named a Leading Intellectual Property Lawyer by the Leading Lawyers Network for several years.
Michael has authored publications and given numerous presentations on intellectual property. He is a member of various organizations, including the American Bar Association, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and NAPABA Law Foundation.
