Just Democracy Illinois files amicus brief to protect Election Day Registration in Illinois

Today, members of Just Democracy Illinois filed an amicus brief in the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals to protect Election Day Registration in Illinois. Members have issued the statement below. Read the full brief here.

“As a coalition, we believe in making civic participation more fair and inclusive for all people in the state. Election Day Registration has made voting more accessible for the people of Illinois, and must be preserved. Protecting EDR is part of a larger effort to preserve voting rights in Illinois that includes overriding the veto of Automatic Voter Registration (SB250). Election Day Registration and Automatic Voter Registration work in tandem to make voting in Illinois secure and accessible to eligible voters. Yesterday, the Illinois State Senate voted to override the veto of AVR. The House will take up the override vote after Thanksgiving.

“Just Democracy Illinois is led by a steering committee of Action Now Institute, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago, CHANGE Illinois, Chicago Votes, Common Cause Illinois, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and Illinois PIRG.”
