POSITION DESCRIPTION

Working closely with the Director of Development and development team, the Development Manager will lead our organization’s individual giving efforts, manage key fundraising campaigns, oversee the donor database, and coordinate development communications.

The Development Manager position will make a significant impact on fundraising success for Advancing Justice | Chicago. This person will manage individual giving efforts, manage fundraising campaigns, develop impactful communications, and ensure effective donor database management and tracking to support the organization and development goals. This position presents a unique opportunity for a flexible, dynamic, detail-oriented, and organized individual to advance this organization’s fundraising commitment to building power through coalition building, base building, and grassroots leadership development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reports to: Director of Development

Individual Giving:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive individual giving strategies, that include recurring donors, estate planning, and mid-level and major donors, to maximize donor acquisition, engagement, and retention;
  • Create a new cultivation and solicitation process, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship;
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with prospective individual donors through personalized communications and other engagement opportunities;
  • Collaborate with Director of Development and other key stakeholders to leverage their networks and support in prospecting and solicitation;
  • Proactively communicate progress, challenges, and opportunities related to individual giving to Director of Development.

Donor Database Management:

  • Oversee the management and optimization of the donor database system (Salesforce), ensuring accurate and up-to-date records of all donors, prospects, and gifts;
  • Leverage the donor database to enhance donor engagement and inform fundraising strategies;
  • Train and support staff in the use of the donor database system, ensuring consistent and accurate data entry and reporting;
  • Develop and maintain systems for tracking and reporting on fundraising activities, donor contributions, and campaign results;
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on fundraising progress, donor retention, acquisition, and revenue trends;
  • Proactively communicate progress, challenges, and opportunities related to donor database to Director of Development.

Fundraising Campaigns Management:

  • Plan and execute key fundraising campaigns, including the end of year campaign and AAPI Heritage Month initiatives;
  • Develop campaign goals, strategies, and timelines, and coordinate cross-functional teams and key stakeholders to achieve campaign objectives;
  • Effectively delegate and hold other team members accountable to their project responsibilities and fundraising goals;
  • Monitor campaign progress, analyze results, and provide recommendations for continuous improvement;
  • Implement strategies to steward and retain donors acquired through campaign efforts;
  • Manage A Just Chi Giving Project’s fundraising efforts.

Development Communications:

  • Create and execute development and fundraising communications plan;
  • Prepare and disseminate communications materials to support fundraising efforts, including targeted communications to key stakeholders (foundations, corporations, donors, etc.), using multiple platforms such as print, electronic, social media, and events outreach;
  • Ensure timely and personalized acknowledgement of all donor contributions;
  • Create toolkits for fundraising campaigns for key stakeholders;
  • Create and post development related social media content;
  • Collaborate with Communications Manager and organizing staff to gather compelling stories and data to create engaging donor-centric content;
  • Support fundraising events and campaigns for Advancing Justice | Chicago stakeholders, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications): 

Knowledge/Experience:

  1. In order to lead and take ownership of individual giving strategies and fundraising campaigns, you have at least three (3) to four (4) years of experience in nonprofit development or fundraising, which gives you a breadth of experience with:
    • Individual giving, donor relations, and tailored communication with donors;
    • Fundraising campaign management;
    • Data management and analysis;
    • Donor relationship management systems, preferably Salesforce.

Skills:

  1. You are detail oriented and have excellent organizational, time management and project management skills; you can handle multiple priorities, keep projects moving, make sure things don’t slip through the cracks, and meet deadlines;
  2. You have impeccable follow through and understand the importance of confidentiality and accurate recordkeeping in maintaining positive donor relations;
  3. You are a clear and empathetic communicator; you are thoughtful and precise in your written and verbal communication, ensuring clarity by organizing information effectively whether writing an internal email or delivering a presentation; you tailor your writing for different audiences and can create compelling fundraising communications; you share context to explain your thoughts and ask questions to understand others’ perspectives and negotiate outcomes that center shared goals;
  4. You are proficient in digital communication and work tools such as Zoom, Google Drive, Microsoft 365/Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Mailchimp, and social media platforms.

COMPENSATION:

This is an exempt, full-time position. This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Advancing Justice | Chicago and the Chicago News Guild.

The salary range is $60,000 – $70,000 depending on experience. Advancing Justice | Chicago offers a full benefits package as outlined below:

Founded in December 2018, Asian American Midwest Progressives (AAMP) endorses progressive candidates, mobilizes Asian American voters, and holds elected officials accountable through issue-based campaigns. Currently, AAMP organizes in Illinois and Ohio.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Community Organizer position is an opportunity for a strategic and motivated relationship-builder to build power with youth (ages 15-25) in the Asian American community, develop grassroots leadership, lead strategic issue campaigns, and move community members to take action.

This position will fall under the staff sharing agreement between Advancing Justice | Chicago and Asian American Midwest Progressives (AAMP) so a portion of time will be spent on 501(c)(4) activities including partisan electoral work.

Key Advancing Justice | Chicago Responsibilities:

  • Develop grassroots, Asian American youth leaders who want to build power, work on issue campaigns, and advance racial equity; prioritize recruiting and developing immigrant, refugee, and working class Asian American student leaders in Chicago Public Schools and colleges/universities in Chicagoland;
  • Organize youth leaders and community members to take action on our key issue areas such as education equity and immigrant justice (e.g. supporting them to use tactics such as meeting with elected officials, public education, direct actions and more);
  • Organize in-person and virtual events, workshops, and trainings;
  • Represent Advancing Justice | Chicago in coalition spaces and contribute to coalition-led issue-based campaigns, primarily around education equity;
  • Staff Advancing Justice | Chicago’s A Just Chi base’s new member & recruitment working group, including mentoring volunteer core leaders and working to create pathways for new leaders to join issue working groups and become active members with the organization;
  • Engage a broader base of individuals through digital outreach (e.g., SMS/texting outreach, emails, social media, etc.);
  • Complete database updates, reimbursement request forms, timesheets, and other administrative tasks as they pertain to the work;
  • Assist development staff in program-related fundraising;
  • Collaborate with other staff on organization-wide initiatives.

Key Asian American Midwest Progressives Responsibilities:

  • Develop grassroots youth leaders to build political power through electoral organizing;
  • Organize canvasses, phonebanks, and other voter outreach and field work targeting high school- and college-age voters and youth leaders.

Qualifications:

  • You have at least 1 cumulative year of experience in issue-based campaigns and/or electoral organizing as a staff member or volunteer and have gained skills and experience in:
      • Base-building by recruiting leaders through various methods (hosting or attending events, leading phone/canvass outreach etc.), conducting 1-1 meetings, and moving them up a ladder of engagement;
      • Planning/leading a significant piece of an issue and/or electoral campaign (field strategy, lobbying/legislative strategy, mobilizing grassroots leaders, research meetings etc.)
      • Partisan and/or non-partisan outreach to voters and community members through phone-banks, door-to-door canvasses, and/or text-banks;
      • Engaging government officials and decision-makers to educate them on issues and/or lobbying them to support a particular bill;
    • You understand the fundamentals of organizing and that your role as an organizer is to find, develop, and support leaders in taking collective action to achieve structural change on issues that affect their lives;
    • You are detail oriented and have excellent organizational, time management and project management skills; you can handle multiple priorities, keep projects moving, make sure things don’t slip through the cracks, respond to email and other communications in a timely manner, and meet deadlines;
    • You are a clear, effective, and empathetic communicator and have excellent written and verbal communication skills whether writing an internal email or giving a presentation; you can speak clearly on behalf of the organization and support community members in doing the same;
    • You are deeply committed to self-reflection, growth mindset, accountability, and navigating conflict directly and compassionately; you understand that self-awareness, personal healing and transformation are critical to movement work;
    • You are deeply committed to social justice, racial equity, and civil rights; you recognize how race, class, gender, immigration status, and other identities impact different communities, and you see how your own identities show up in the work;
    • You have a proven track record of building strong relationships and serious appetite for meeting new people whether by going door-to-door or making calls and want to meet people where they are at to bring them into the work;
    • You have strong self-starting work habits that demonstrate creativity, initiative, and mission-orientation; you make things happen in alignment with your work plan and responsibilities while also being open to receiving direction;
    • You want to learn new skills and welcome coaching, training, and feedback;
    • You know community organizing work is ever evolving and are open and willing to adapt and respond to changing environments;
    • You can be flexible in working hours, including working some evenings and weekends, to meet community members when they are available (compensatory time is offered for evening and weekend work);
    • You are proficient in online platforms and work tools such as Zoom, Google Drive, and Microsoft 365/Microsoft Office Suite;

Experience with any of the following is helpful but not required:

  • Working in Asian American or immigrant communities;
  • Leading trainings on community organizing principles or skills;
  • Issue area expertise around education equity and immigrant justice;
  • Working for elected officials or in government in another capacity;
  • Bilingual in English and an Asian language.

COMPENSATION

Exempt, full-time position. The starting salary range for the Community Organizer position is $50,000 – $60,000 based on experience. Advancing Justice | Chicago offers a generous full benefits package. POSITION DESCRIPTION 

Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago and Asian American Midwest Progressives are seeking a motivated Communications Manager to develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that includes elevating our advocacy work in five priority issue areas and supporting fundraising strategies.

The Communications Manager will work collaboratively across all departments within the organization to develop, write/edit, and pitch content for print, radio, digital, and social media platforms. This position will help set the organizational tone and voice through editorial content and media engagement, including emails, social media posts, newsletter stories, press, marketing collateral, and other communication vehicles. The position requires a self-starter who is creative, takes initiative, and can shepherd a project from conception to execution.  

This position will fall under the staff sharing agreement between Advancing Justice | Chicago and Asian American Midwest Progressives (AAMP) so a portion of time will be spent on 501(c)(4) activities, which may include partisan electoral work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 
Reports to: Director of Development 

Leadership, Strategy & Implementation 

  • Work with Senior Staff to craft organizational communications strategy with defined outcomes, activities, and responsibilities; 
  • Co-create advocacy/issue-related communications strategy with Political Director, Organizing Director, and Executive Director; 
  • Co-create development communications strategy with Development Director; 
  • Collaborate with Organizing Team to strategize, plan, and execute issue campaign-related communications; 
  • Provide media/spokesperson training to key stakeholders, including staff and grassroots volunteer leaders; 
  • Coordinate with Asian Americans Advancing Justice national affiliation on national communications, including joint statements and releases;
     

PR/Media Relations 

  • Develop and actively cultivate Advancing Justice | Chicago and AAMP’s relationships with media, including reporters, editors, and producers at key mainstream and ethnic media outlets; 
  • Ensure coverage by mainstream, ethnic, and new media of Advancing Justice | Chicago and AAMP’s work through an effective media relations strategy that includes drafting press releases/media advisories and organizing press conferences; 
  • Engage in persuasive and creative pitching to national, state, and local outlets on a regular basis; 
  • Respond to media requests in a timely manner, exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare staff and community leaders with talking points and through mock interviews, as needed; 
  • Flag rapid response content for issuespecific media and ethnic media contacts (including but not limited to immigration, education, police accountability, language access, just democracy, voting rights, social justice, and racial equity); 
  • Track all media contacts and earned media coverage.


Digital Communications
 

  • Create compelling content that mobilizes Advancing Justice | Chicago and AAMP’s supporters and partners to participate in Advancing Justice | Chicago and AAMP’s campaigns, including visual graphics; 
  • Manage all organizational social media accounts, including content creation, scheduling, and copy; 
  • Manage and update the Advancing Justice | Chicago and AAMP websites; 
  • Draft and disseminate monthly and stakeholder newsletters; 
  • Regularly update, clean, and segment the Advancing Justice | Chicago and AAMP email lists;  
  • Track and regularly report on digital analytics and metrics, and provide recommendations on how to increase engagement across digital platforms (email, social media, website)
     

Development  

  • Oversee the development and execution of annual and impact reports; 
  • Prepare and disseminate communications materials to support fundraising efforts, including targeted communications to key stakeholders (media, foundations, corporations, donors, etc.), using multiple platforms such as print, electronic, social media, and events outreach; 
  • Co-create digital toolkits for campaigns with Development Associate; 
  • Support fundraising events and campaigns for Advancing Justice | Chicago stakeholders, as needed. 


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
 

As the Communications Manager, they should demonstrate a unique blend of qualities and skills that reflect a passion and commitment to the organization’s mission, including the following: 

  • 2-4 years of Marketing and Communications experience; 
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, racial equity, and civil rights; 
  • Proven ability to develop and execute a successful strategic communications strategy and plan across all platforms–traditional, digital, and social–whether paid, earned, or owned; 
  • Exemplary writing and interpersonal communications skills; 
  • A refined and nuanced ability to craft targeted content and disseminate messages in ways that reflect, engage, and enhance various complex community and cultural perspectives; 
  • Proficiency in design sensibilities, with a strong understanding of the communications process from creative concept through production and execution; 
  • Successful targeting and influencing key audiences using data and analytics to ensure effectiveness and measure success; 
  • Excellent collaborator, engaging in cross-department planning and strategy sessions, with exposure to all staff and levels of the organization; 
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends for events and special projects as needed; 
  • Strong organizational skills, multitasking, and problem-solving skills; 
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, showing grace and willingness to help; 
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Mailchimp, WordPress; Social Media Platforms 


COMPENSATION

The salary range is $55,000 – $65,000 depending on experience.
