A coalition of immigrant rights organizations welcomed the Chicago City Council’s passage of an amendment to strengthen the Welcoming City Ordinance today. While this action is a testament to a two-year campaign to further protect immigrants the coalition recognizes the need to support community-led efforts to assure real solutions to the problem of police misconduct and violence against communities of color.

Asian Americans and immigrants across Illinois are involved in this campaign because we know that the right to vote in this country was a hard fought battle from its beginning. Automatic Voter Registration increases access to the ballot box, which is a crucial step to a more engaged electorate. Combined with the recent lawsuit attempting to stop Election Day Registration, this veto signifies a step backwards for voting rights in Illinois.

Just Democracy Illinois will work with our allies from both parties to override this veto. Now is not the time for Illinois to move backward on voting rights.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice) sends our thoughts and prayers to the families of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota, two African American men who were shot and killed during separate tragic encounters with law enforcement this week. We are facing an epidemic of African American fathers, sons, mothers, and daughters who are dying at the hands of police in this country. It must stop.
